FAQs

About window tint.

How long does window tint take to install?
+
Most full-vehicle tint jobs take 2 to 4 hours depending on the vehicle and the film tier. SUVs and trucks with quarter glass take longer than sedans. We'll give you a precise estimate when you book, and you're welcome to wait in the shop or drop off and pick up.
How long does window tint last?
+
Quality film, installed correctly, lasts the life of the vehicle. Our SolarFX films come with a manufacturer warranty that covers fading, bubbling, peeling, and adhesive failure. Cheap film from a discount shop will start failing in 1–3 years — that's the difference our 40 years of experience makes.
Is window tint legal in Kansas?
+
Yes, within limits. Kansas allows 35% visible light transmission (VLT) on the front side windows and 35% on rear side windows and the back glass. The top 5 inches of the windshield can be tinted as well. We tint to the legal limit by default and can confirm darker tints on rear glass if your vehicle qualifies for an exception.
What's the difference between dyed, carbon, and ceramic tint?
+
Dyed film is the entry tier — it darkens the glass and blocks some UV, but offers minimal heat rejection. Carbon film is color-stable, won't fade purple over time, and blocks more heat. Ceramic film is the top tier: it rejects infrared heat (the part of sunlight that actually makes your car hot), doesn't interfere with phone signals or GPS, and lasts the longest. If you live in Kansas summers, ceramic pays for itself in cabin comfort.
Can I roll my windows down after tint is installed?
+
We recommend leaving the windows up for 3 to 5 days after installation. The film needs time to cure and bond fully to the glass. Rolling down too soon can pull the edges and leave permanent imperfections.
Will tint fade or turn purple over time?
+
Cheap dyed film fades and turns purple — it's the dye breaking down under UV. Our carbon and ceramic films are color-stable for the life of the vehicle. If you've seen purple tint on the road, it's a film failure that won't happen with what we install.
Do you remove old window tint?
+
Yes. We charge a removal fee based on the condition of the existing film, then quote your new install. Old, bubbled tint that's been on for years takes longer to strip than recent film, but we handle the full job either way.
How does residential window tint save energy?
+
Solar control films block 50–80% of solar heat from entering through your windows, which reduces the load on your air conditioning. Most customers see a 10–15% reduction in summer cooling bills. The film also blocks 99% of UV rays, which means floors, furniture, and artwork stop fading.
Will residential tint make my house look dark or weird from the street?
+
Not unless you want it to. Modern solar control films can be nearly invisible — they reject heat through advanced spectrally-selective technology, not by being dark. We'll show you samples on your own glass before we install.
Can window tint help with break-ins or storm damage?
+
Yes. Security film is much thicker than standard window film and is engineered to hold glass together when it shatters. It dramatically slows forced entry attempts and keeps glass from becoming dangerous shrapnel during severe storms. We install it on commercial storefronts, ground-floor residential glass, and conference rooms.
Do I need an appointment?
+
Yes — we book by appointment so each vehicle gets the dedicated time it deserves. You can book online through our assistant or call us at (785) 775-0202. Walk-ins are welcome to come look at film samples and chat, but installs are scheduled.
Do you offer a warranty?
+
Every install carries a lifetime workmanship warranty from us, plus the manufacturer warranty on the film or coating itself. If anything bubbles, peels, or fails, bring it back — we'll make it right.
Do you serve Fort Riley?
+
Yes — Fort Riley is a huge part of our customer base. We're 15 minutes from the West Gate and used to PCS timelines, so if you're moving in or out and need work done quickly, just tell us your timeline when you book.
How long have you been in business?
+
Jay and Tish Carroll founded Precision Tint in 1986. We've been on Fort Riley Blvd serving Manhattan, Junction City, and Fort Riley for nearly four decades. Most of our customers come back, and a lot of them are now bringing in vehicles for their kids.
